Attymass stage 2016 Gathering
Attymass Parish in North Mayo is to stage a 2016 Attymass Gathering from Thursday 28 July until Sunday 31 July. The Four day festival hopes to emulate the huge success of its first Gathering in 2013 and will feature an array of events aimed at all age groups. It is being supported by Mayo County Council, Mayo.ie, Failte Ireland and Mayo Manchester Tourism and Business group who are working with the Attymass Community Centre and other members of the parish to stage the unique family friendly festival.
Tony Hennigan from Mayo Manchester who has a house in Attymass commented "We are delighted to join forces with the parish once more, we are combining are including the events in our six day Mayo Manchester Tradfest which runs from Friday 29 July to Wednesday 3 August and features over 60 events in and around Ballina. Some of our performers are travelling over early to help the performers in the parish launch the Attymass Gathering in the newly opened community centre. It should be a great four days and I look forward to meeting old friends and making new ones during the event. Although the event is primarily focused on reuniting the Attymass Diaspora who are scattered around the world it is open to everyone to enjoy whether they have a connection to the parish or not. There will always be 'a warm welcome on the mat' in Attymass to all the visitors."
Attymass is a small parish of just 475 houses which is just seven miles outside of Ballina along the Church Road, the rural parish is famous for being home to the international Fr Peyton Centre and Performance Theatre. It's cultural heritage dates back to the pre-Celtic invasion. A number of Celtic artifacts of significant historical importance are located around the village, these include giant Celtic Ogham Stones, Wedge Graves, Ring Forts, a Crannog and a seven century Abbey.
