Failte Ireland supported MMTradfest expected to attract 50,000

The return of the Failte Ireland and Wild Atlantic Way supported annual 6 Day Mayo Manchester ‘MMTradfest’ is expected to attract over 50,000 to Ballina at the end of July. The six day festival which runs from Friday 29 July to Wednesday 3 August features Irish musicians, singers and dancers from both Mayo and Manchester. It is a unique collaboration between the two areas. Just over one hundred performers are involved at over sixty events in the Tradfest which takes place in and around Ballina in North Mayo.
Ballina TD Dara Calleary commented at the recent press launch for the festival “It is great to see Mayo and Manchester working together to produce this great celebration of our Irish Culture and Heritage.”

The Festival is being supported by the The Western People, Mayo Manchester Tourism and Business group, Ballina Town Council, Ballina Chamber, Mayo North, Mayo.ie, Mayo County Council, Failte Ireland, The Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland West Airport, Excel Excavations, the Levenshulme Pub Company, The Horseshoe Levenshulme, Giro de Baille, Atlantic Rhythm Production, The Keegan Academy of Irish Dancing and the Universe Media group.

Lawrence Hennigan from Mayo Manchester added “We have received a tremendous amount of support for the festival both in Mayo and Manchester. As well as our official supporters we would like to acknowledge the help given to us by the Ballina Salmon Festival, who we have been working with for a number of years, their support for this new festival has been invaluable. The six day festival which is based in the Arts Centre and numerous live music venues in Ballina will also be visiting Attymass, Bonniconlon, Crossmolina, Foxford, Kilkelly and Swindford.”

The celebration of Traditional Irish Music, Song and Dance features a host of award winning musicians, singers and dancers. Performers from Manchester include The award winning Keegan Academy of Irish Dance trained by the Lord of the Dance, James Keegan and his sister Louise. Joe keegan from the BBC TV series The Voice and The Fianna Phadraig Pipe Band. Performers from Mayo include The Irish Singers, Musicians and Dancers from the Atlantic Rhythm Production company, David Doocey and Tom Dherty from the The Admiral Brown CCE group, TG4 TV star Pamela Gilmartin, The Heroes for Hospice Choir, the Sean Nos Dancers - The Ganley Sisters and The Trad group The Murphy Sisters plus acoustic singer songwriters Dennis McCalmount and Brian Duffy.

Although based in Ballina, the festival will the surrounding towns in North Mayo calling at Attymass, the Bonniconlon Show, Foxford, Crossmolina, Siamsa Sraide in Swindford and the Kilkelly Heritage Day

As part of this years Mayo Manchester Tradfest The Wolfdog Tavern hope to recreate a Tradfest Session in 1916 to commemorate Ireland's Centenary. Put on your flat cap and step back in time by sampling the Boxty, homemade bread and jam, as you watch local musician belt out all the Traditional tunes. Visitors are encouraged to tog themselves out in what we would consider traditional Irish dress, so dig out your Cap shawls, flat cap and pipe!
