Mayo Council fly into Manchester to help launch countdown to Mayo Day
Levenshulme in South Manchester was turned Green and Red to celebrate the start of the two week 2019 Manchester Irish Festival which runs from Friday 1st to Sunday 17 March. Councillors Damian Ryan and Michael Holmes together with Neil Sheridan from Mayo County Council flew over to Manchester to help launch the festival with the award winning Fianna Phadraig Pipe Band and promote Tourism in the West of Ireland and launch the countdown to the global 'Mayo Day' celebration in May.
The band who were performing at the popular Levenshulme Market and then staged a short parade of the village which is home to one of the biggest Mayo Diaspora communities around the world. Cllr Damian Ryan commented "We arrived straight from the airport and all I could see when I opened the taxi door was the Green and Red of the Pipe Band performing on the high street, I am looking forward to welcoming the group on their return visit to Ashford Castle in Cong in August for the annual Mayo Manchester Tradfest."
Tony Hennigan from the Mayo Manchester Tourism and Business group whose Mayo roots stem from Attymass Parish in North Mayo added "It was great to get a visit from the Mayo Council representatives to help us with the launching of our annual Irish Festival and the countdown to Mayo Day. We are celebrating the 30th Anniversary of my brothers Levenshulme Pub Company this year, we had a surprise visit from Mayo GAA stars Diarmuid O'Connor and Paddy Durcan last week and this week the Council Pop over, it is great to have such support.
Levenshulme are staging 30 free Irish Events which are being sponsored by the Levenshulme Pub Company, these include a whole host of Irish Music Concerts which include a whole weekend of events promoting the West of Ireland in conjunction with Mayo.ie and a host of Mayo Hotels and Tourism related companies on Saturday 16 March and Sunday 17 March at Freds Ale House in Levenshulme. BBC Singer Songwriter, Claire Mooney will headline the St Patrick's Eve concert whilst the five piece 'Moor Irish' Trad band headline the St Patrick's Night Concert at the same venue.
m19 Bar will stage a special Mayo Day Evening Tradfest Concert with the award winning 'Mayo Man' - Peter Mylett who recently the popular 'Greenway Song', support comes from the Fianna Phadraig Pipe Band and the Rambling Boys of Pleasure and the Grace Kennedy School of Irish Dancing.
The annual award winning Mayo Manchester Tradfest week which is now in is 8th year returns to Mayo from Thursday 1st to Wednesday 7th August and takes place at 7 different hubs across the North, South, East and West of the County which take in Attymass, Ballina, Westport, Achill, Bonniconlon, Ashford Castle and Enniscrone.
