Mayo Manchester Turn United Green and Red for Home to Mayo promotion

Resplendent in their Green and Red uniforms the award winning Fianna Phadraig Pipe Band from Mayo Manchester turned United Green and Red on Saturday 12 March in a ‘Home to Mayo’ promotion at the stadium. The band who are approaching their 75th Anniversary managed to perform at the world famous Manchester United‘s Football Stadium at Old Trafford in Manchester.

The band performed in front of the stadium before their top of the table sell out clash with Tottenham Hotspur which attracted 75,000 fans.

Tony Hennigan from the Mayo Manchester commented “We got a great reception from the fans and Ronaldo even scored a hat trick in this must win game for United, so I guess we brought them the luck of the Irish. The event was to promote our forthcoming week long ‘Home to Mayo’ tradfest which is being staged in Mayo from Thursday 26 May to Tuesday 31 May.”

"This isn’t the first time that the band have played the stadium, they first played the stadium in 1957 and are one of only a handful of performers who have been given permission to play at the stadium. The performance was just one of 24 gigs for the popular band during this years two week Manchester Irish Festival.

They were also asked to officially launch this years Manchester Irish Festival with a two hour live broadcast by OnEire with presenters John Joe Casserley and Clare Flynn. The launch took place at the popular Irish bar, The Farmers Arms in Burnage. It featured performances from the band alongside banjo player Angela Usher and her group of trad musicians. Plus fiddle player Colleen Langan, the Keegan Academy of Irish Dance and Singer songwriter, Queen Grace.

The Home to Mayo Tradfest which features from Mayo and Manchester will stage events at Achill Island, Ashford Castle, Cong, Ballina Arts Cente, Ballinrobe Race Course, Castlebar, Killala and Westport.
