Attymass Dancer wins third World Irish Dancing Championship

Eleven year old Stephen Gallagher from Attymass in North Mayo has just picked up his third World Irish Dancing Championship. The dancer is a member of the Shelia Moffatt School of Irish Dancing and is following in the footsteps of the Schools other World Irish Dancing Champion - Lisa Lavelle.

Stephen only started dancing four years ago and has just won the 2015 Cumann Rince Naisiunta World Irish Dancing trophy in Castlebar, he also holds the 2015 Cumann Rince de mheasa World Irish Dancing Trophy which he won in April and the 2014 World Irish Dancing Association trophy in 2014.

When asked about how he felt about winning so many World Trophies the dancer replied “I would like to thank my teacher Shelia Moffatt for all the time and effort she has put in to helping me win the trophies and to my parents for taking me to all the classes and competitions. There are some great dancers at the School and I am delighted to be following in the footsteps of Lisa Lavelle in winning the World Championship trophies.”

Dance teacher Shelia Moffat commented “Stephen has been doing really well since he started dancing and has been getting very close to winning, they seem to be flooding in now since 2014, long may it continue. As well as competing in the dancing competitions, Stephen is a regular performer at our Atlantic Rhythm Show on a Tuesday night at Hotel Westport and our Wednesday night Country Cottage Show at Enniscoe House which take place every week in July and August. He has also been selected to appear in the prestigious Mayo Manchester Tradfest which runs from Friday 31 July to Wednesday 5 August.”

Tony Hennigan from Mayo Manchester added "It is great to Stephen doing so well, he lives just down the road from our cottage in Attymass, we are really proud of him in the parish. He first danced for Mayo Manchester for the Gathering in 2013 and he has been a permenant fixture in all of our festivals including our sell out Tradfest at Dublin City Hall in Temple bar. It is great to see so many award winning musicians, singers and dancers involved in this years tradfest, it is looking like our best line up to date.
