250 Photographs to celebrate Westport’s 250th Anniversary
A twitter account www.twitter.com/westport250 has been set up to celebrate the 250th Anniversary of Westport Town in Mayo. The site will feature 250 photographs of the town which was voted by the Irish Times as the best place to live in Ireland.
The idea for the social media account to celebrate the areas people, places and areas of interest has been set up by the Mayo Manchester Tourism and Business Group www.mayomanchester.com who commented “It’s not every day that the best place to live in Ireland celebrates its 250th anniversary and we wanted to do something to highlight the towns year-long campaign. We have been approached to bring the award winning Mayo Manchester Tradfest to Westport in the summer and we thought it might be a nice idea to get involved in the #Westport250 celebrations as well.”
“MayoManchester has joined forces with local photographer and film maker Aoife Bourke to help with the site. Aoife has just graduated from the Dublin Business School with a BA in Film and Media and an Honours degree in Film Studies with a first class honour in Digital Advertising. She has just moved back to Mayo to set up her own company called AB Social Media Consultancy working with local Mayo companies and business to help them to set up and develop their social media presence to promote themselves.”
Despite the site only being online for a couple of days over 70 photographs have already been posted to the site. Anybody can contribute to the site by just tweeting their photograph to @westport250 and adding the hashtag #Westport250 all photographs will be credited on the site and remain the copyright of the photographer who has taken the original image. Aoife added “I’m really excited about being part of the #Westport250 campaign. I feel that Westport has so much potential to showcase itself to its full strengths. It is a truly unique and beautiful area. A town full of wonderful people and a wealth of interesting spots to be discovered within it. As well as the twitter site it would be nice to stage an exhibition of some of the best images and maybe a calendar or book. It could even be extended into a multi-media campaign involving Youtube and film clips online.”
